Mary Ward, an English woman, founded the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) to serve the church, “through education and other works congruous to the times”. This Religious order, now spread through the world, engages itself in many works including the education of girls.
In 1821 the Irish Branch of the Institute, commonly known as LORETO was established. The LORETO Sisters first came to India from Ireland in 1841. Loreto Day School, Bowbazar was established in 1844.
